How to Purchase TERCs
This guide outlines each stage of the buyer process, from initial onboarding through transaction and retirement on the Xpansiv Digital Fuels Registry, providing clarity on how organizations can participate with confidence.
A Guide for Buyers
1. Buyer Calculates Supplier Scope 3 Footprint
Buyer uses supplier shipment-level data (routes, modes, fuel use) to calculate Scope 3 emissions and track progress toward its reduction goal.
2. Buyer Defines Low-Carbon Fuel Criteria
To address the transportation component of these emissions, Buyer sets sustainability criteria - feedstocks, certifications, carbon intensity (CI) thresholds, and regional sourcing - to qualify fuels eligible for TERC crediting.
3. Eco-Energy Identifies Qualifies Producers
Eco-Energy sources and vet producers whose renewable diesel or other low-CI fuels meet the buyer’s criteria and are verified under the TERC platform methodologies. Each pathway must have auditable CI scores and be book-and-claim compatible.
4. Attribute Acquisition
Buyer enters an over-the-counter (OTC) contract with these producers or a producer representative to purchase only the environmental attributes (TERCs), not the physical fuel, preserving a clean chain of custody and avoiding double-counting.
5. OTC Sale Between Producer and Buyer
Through the Xpansiv Digital Fuel Registry, Buyer manages TERC transfers and retirements.
